Tahini & Sesame: Flavor, Nutrition & Allergens

Food & nutrition · Syrian Sweets of America · Published October 22, 2026

Understand tahini in hummus and tehineh sauce, how portions affect a meal, and why sesame-allergy questions matter when ordering.

Tehineh (Tahini Sauce) from Syrian Sweets of America
Tehineh (Tahini Sauce) — explore the prepared dish below.

A seed paste, not a dairy cream

Tahini is made from ground sesame seeds. It can be mixed into hummus or loosened with lemon and water for tehineh sauce. Its creamy appearance does not mean it contains dairy, but a particular sauce may have additional ingredients. Always confirm the formulation rather than guessing from texture.

What sesame contributes

Seeds appear in USDA’s protein-food guidance. Tahini contributes fat and flavor as well as nutrients from sesame, and concentrated seed pastes can be easy to spoon generously. That does not make tahini something to avoid; it means the amount and the rest of the meal deserve attention. We do not publish product-specific nutrient values here.

The allergy question

Sesame is a major food allergen recognized by the FDA. A hummus bowl, bread topping or pastry garnish may contain it, and shared preparation can introduce cross-contact. Ask direct questions about sesame and handling if you have an allergy. A small visible garnish does not tell you whether sesame is also blended into the dish.

Sauce changes the plate

A thick dipping sauce and a thin drizzle are different uses of the same ingredient. Water loosens tahini but does not remove the sesame it contains. When cooking at home, add liquid gradually for the texture you want. When ordering, ask whether sauce is included, mixed in or packed separately.

Serve it purposefully

Use tehineh with falafel, vegetables or kibbeh to add contrast rather than covering every dish with the same topping. Pair it with lemony salad and another protein choice as needed. Guests with sesame allergies require a genuinely suitable alternative confirmed by the food provider—not simply leaving the garnish off.
